Nicola's Scarlet Letter Year

I've been invited to join Nicola and Jo over at Nicola's Scarlet Letter Year blog.  Nicola is turning the big 5-0 this year.  So to celebrate she's invited folks to come stitch Scarlet Letter samplers all year long with her!

I've had several on my wish list for a while now.  This was just the kick in the pants I needed to get one off the list and into my hands.  So which one did I pick you ask?  Well first let's look at the contenders!

There is something special about each of these and eventually I hope to at least own the charts.  Maybe even stitch them someday.  However, there is one that really tugged at me and ultimately is the one I declared "the one" for me!

I have a thing for hornbooks, I always have!  So it was a no-brainer that this was the one I chose.  I've always loved it and now I can't wait to stitch it.

I plan to ask for this for Christmas.  If I don't get it at Christmas, then I'll order it on my birthday.  Yep, having a birthday at the holiday season can be a curse most of the time.  However, in this case it might work out to be a blessing or at least a second chance to get this kit/chart.  LOL!

I've already got another sampler in mind to start in the new year with some of the peeps as a SAL and I didn't want to commit to another BAP on top of that.  I think this will fit the bill nicely.  It seems to me to be a manageable size.  It's also got the colors of my living room in it too so I know exactly where this will hang when it's finished.

The invitation to join this group comes at a good time too.  I just printed off the last "assignment" for my Ellen Maurer-Stroh BAP.  I hope to get a lot of stitching time in on it this weekend.  My goal is to have the BAP done by next Saturday.  Now I'll have the Scarlet Letter Hornbook to fill the void.

So there you have it folks, that's what I've been up to.  Have you started thinking about what you'll stitch next year?  If you have, tell me in the comments.  I'd love to hear all about it!

I hope everyone has a good weekend and gets some stitching time in too.  Thank you so much for visiting with me today!

Until next time,

Third Ornament Finished & Pie!

I hope everyone who celebrated had a good Thanksgiving.  Mine was pretty low key but nice.  I'm also happy to report MIL came through the surgery just fine.  Thanks to all who sent well wishes.

I was able to get a good start on my third ornament for our guild's Christmas party while in the waiting room.  I managed to finish it this weekend and make a start on the fourth one.  Check it out!

Design:  Joy of Christmas
Designer:  My Big Toe Designs
Fabric:  36 ct. white iridescent linen
Floss:  Belle Soie "Tulip"
Started:  11/16/12
Finished:  11/23/12
Completed:  11/23/12

I can't show you the back of this one as it's personalized for the recipient.  I know she reads the blog too.  I just hope she likes it.

I stitched it over two instead of the over one as charted.  Using the 36ct. helped it not be too large.  It still turned out a little bigger than anticipated but I like it.  I wish the iridescent threads showed up better in the picture.  It really makes it feel festive.

I decided to use silk on this one.  I could have used DMC but I wanted to treat myself with the silk.  It just feels so yummy!  Aren't we stitchers all about feeling the fabric and floss anyway?  I know I am!

I'm so glad to be on the downhill side of the commitment stitching.  I need to finish up the fourth ornament and then it will be BAP time again.  There just aren't enough hours in the day to do all the stitching I'd like to do and still work too.  I'm sure all of you that work know what I mean.  I'm really looking forward to the time off at Christmas.

***

Speaking of the holidays, I had a request for my pie recipe.  I don't have a picture to share as we ate it all up before I even thought to snap one (I grabbed this one from a Google search).  You'll have to take my word for it when I say it was yummy!  I know there are a couple blog readers out there that can testify.

Now I must tell you a little history about this particular pie.  The recipe was created between 1810 and 1825 by the North Carolina Quakers who settled on farms along the eastern border of Indiana, especially in the Winchester, Richmond, Portland and New Castle areas.  It is also the official Indiana state pie!

I grew up eating it and never realized it was a regional thing. Most of my friends in the city had never eaten it or heard of it.  It has no eggs or butter in it unlike other versions of this type of pie.  Here's the recipe.  Let me know if you make one.

Indiana Sugar Cream Pie

1/2 Cup white sugar
1/2 Cup packed brown sugar
1/2 Cup all-purpose flour
pinch of salt
1 pint heavy whipping cream (I've used half and half but it's not as good)
freshly ground nutmeg
1 unbaked pie crust (Mrs. Pillsbury makes mine but you can suit yourself)

Mix all the dry ingredients together (white sugar, brown sugar, flour and salt).
Slowly add the whipping cream.  Do not over stir.
Pour into unbaked pie crust.
Grate nutmeg over top. (I always freshly grate mine.)

Bake at 400 degrees for 15 minutes.  Turn down the heat to 350 and bake for 20-25 minutes more.  The pie will be a bit jiggly in the middle when you take it out but it will firm up as it cools.

Well folks, that's all I've got for you today.  I hope everyone had a good holiday and I hope you have a good week too.  Thanks for your visit today!

Until next time,

Secret Stitcher

Last night I had a big box waiting for me when I got home from work.  My wonderful Secret Stitcher did it again! Just look at what was inside that box!

This basket cornucopia reminds me of the one my Granny A. always had on her dining room table this time of year.  I always wanted one of my own and now I have one.  Thank you Secret Stitcher for bringing back a very pleasant memory for me.

There were three really nice sized pieces of linen in the basket and a super cute note with a surprise inside it!

Just look at that cute note.  I can tell she's had fun sending my packages this year and I've enjoyed receiving them too.

Here's a closer look at the zipper.  Just look at the little sparkles on the zipper teeth and the pull!  This is going to go on a very special bag someday and I'll remember my Secret Stitcher when I look at it too.

She also included this super cute note pad.  Just look at that festive turkey pilgrim.  You'll also notice the purple Hello Kitty ribbon!  This was tied around the fabric bundle and the note.  It's just too cute!

Thank you so much Secret Stitcher!  I've truly enjoyed your packages this year.  I can't wait to meet you next month at the Christmas party!  I can't wait to thank you in person.

***

Well folks, those of us in the States are inching ever closer to the big feast!  I hope you've got your turkey thawing.  I'll be going to my MIL's house.  My SIL and I are cooking this year.  I'll make my Indiana sugar cream pie and whatever else my SIL needs me to make.

We are spoiling my MIL this year as she is scheduled for eye surgery tomorrow.  There's no way we are letting her get near that kitchen.  We'll see how well that works out.  LOL!

I hope everyone has a good rest of the week and gets some stitching time in at some point.  I'm pretty sure I'll get a bunch done in the waiting room tomorrow and the days to come.  Thank you for stopping by and visiting with me.  Your friendships mean a lot and I am thankful for each and every one.

Until next time,

BAP Update November Edition

Started: 10/31/12
Finished: 11/11/12

As promised, here's the BAP update for November.  It's really starting to look like something now!  It's so hard for me to believe I've got one more "assignment" and this one will be complete.  I'm going to miss it.

November's "assignment"

This part is November's "assignment."  I did work ahead on the bottom border since I was on a roll with it.  It will save me time next month as my goal is to have this finished in time to show it off at the guild's Christmas party.

Lower right corner

I decided to stop just short of the corner since I really couldn't go any farther anyway.  I noticed on the big picture that all the corners are turned slightly differently so I have to wait until next month to see how this one goes.  It will be a snap to finish though.

Butterfly row

I also finally got to see the entire butterfly row finished!  As I've said, these butterflies and the dog were the two designs that drew me to this sampler.  They are so pretty!  I wish you could see them in person.

Completed bird

For all you bird lovers out there, here's a close up picture of the completed bird and part of that fantastic cabbage rose.  I didn't realize how much depth was in that rose until I'd finished stitching it and stood back from it.  I just love cabbage roses!

I'm not one to start things and just throw them to the side after a while.  No commitment issues here!  I just have to keep going on them.  I know I sound like a broken record but I really love this sampler and have from the very first stitch! I really am going to miss it when it is finished.

However, have no fear, I already have another one percolating in the wings.  I just have to choose which fabric I want to use and pull the threads.  So stay tuned dear readers because the fun is going to continue in 2013!

Well folks that's all I have for today!  I need to get crackin' on my last two ornaments and start seriously thinking about the upcoming holidays.  I hope your day is splendid!  Thanks for stopping by!

Until next time,

TUSAL November

Yep, it's TUSAL day again already!  I can hardly believe we only have one more before this year is over.  I sure hope January and February speed by so we can get to spring quicker!  Just because I was born in the winter doesn't mean I have to like it.  LOL!  So here's the ORT pile for this month.

This month's ORTs were brought to you by the following contributors:

Three Pumpkins [the small one] by Prairie Grove Peddler (Needs completed)
Summer Sachet by Blackbird Designs x2 (Done!)
Friends freebie by Cosmic Handmade (In progress)
Joy to You 2012 by Glory Bee (Done!)
November "assignment" for the EMS SAL (Done!)
Britty Christmas Kitty by Brittercup Designs (Done!)

Well folks, there you have it!  Not too bad a list I'd say.  I can't believe we are inching ever closer to the holiday season already.  It seems like it was just summer yesterday.  It was wasn't it?!

Until next time,

Second Ornament Finish

I am happy to report that the weekend brought much stitchy progress!  Saturday I spent the day working on my second ornament while sitting in the lawn chair with Miss Shelby romping about the yard.  Who would have imagined two weeks before Thanksgiving it was 70 degrees and sunny?!

Here it is ready for completion.

Here's the finished back!

Design:  Britty Christmas Kitty (from 2005 JCS Ornaments)
Designer:  Brittercup Designs
Fabric:  32 ct. Cream
Floss:  DMC 3831, 3799, 729, 520, 3347
Started:  10/29/12
Finished:  11/11/12
Completed:  11/11/12

This is such a cute design.  It reminds me of my Ace Kitty.  I had him when I lived at home.  This was such a fun stitch.  It's charted as over one but I wasn't in the mood so I did mine over two.  It finished into a perfect sized ornament.

I feel like I'm making progress now!  Two down, two to go.  I'm half way there now.  I also finished my November BAP "assignment" last night.  More on that later.  It gets its own post.

***

My honey and I got sucked into watching "The Men Who Built America" series on the History Channel.  They played all the episodes starting in the early afternoon.  Needless to say I got lots of stitching done and a proper case of flat butt syndrome too.

The series told of how Cornelius Vanderbilt, John D. Rockefeller, Andrew Carnegie, J. P. Morgan, and Henry Ford helped the country move into the industrial age after the Civil War.  As a history buff, this series really captured my attention.  It was hard to stitch during the good parts though!  This caused a couple visits from the frog but nothing that wasn't quickly fixed!

***

Well folks, I hope you had a good stitchy weekend too.  I've got a couple posts brewing for you this week.  Tomorrow is TUSAL time again and of course you have to see the BAP!  Things to look forward to.  Have a great day!

Country life and a stitch-in

So last Saturday was the guild's all day stitch-in and I woke up to this in my driveway!  Yep, you know you live in the country when there's a combine, that doesn't belong to you, parked in your driveway.   This seriously does not happen in the burbs!  LOL!

Actually, it's owner did ask permission to leave it overnight. Apparently it threw a fanbelt and was overheating. Our driveway was big enough for him to pull it off the road so he could investigate the problem.

I had been sitting on the couch stitching when I noticed headlights reflecting on the wall in the foyer.  So I got up to see who was out there.  I knew it was too soon for my honey to be coming home.  When I first looked out I thought it was my neighbor and didn't think too much of it.  He's been running corn lately on another farm.

Turns out it wasn't my neighbor but another farmer from down the road.  He asked to leave it since it was too hot to work on it at that hour.  So yep, I woke up to a new "vehicle" in my driveway.

Thankfully he was able to pull it over far enough for me to get my car around it and still keep it on the concrete without wrecking the yard.  I sure wouldn't want to have that get stuck in the grass!  It's always some kind of unique excitement when you live in the country!

***

We had a good turnout at the stitch-in.  I always like to try to go if I can.  We have an amazing group of very talented folks in our guild.  I always look forward to getting together and seeing what everyone is working on.

I took my Ellen Maurer-Stroh BAP.  I was able to make some pretty good progress on my November's "assignment."  It's almost finished and hope to wrap it up this weekend.  I'll be sure to post about it when I get it done.  One more month and it will be complete!

Let's look at some of the wonderful Show and Tell folks brought.  I'm always so inspired after these get togethers!  We really are a talented group.

This one is so pretty.  I love it!

This is one of those that the more you look at it the more you see.

This one was done by my peep, Marsha.  It turned out so nice!

I've not seen this one before!  I've always loved this old church song.

This was one of the guild's class pieces from this year.  It's a Mexican sampler by Ellen Cross.

My dear friend, Nicole, made this one.  I had to shoot it from an awkward angle since it was so big! She likes to do really large samplers.  This piece is almost as tall as she is!!!  It's amazing to see in person.  EDITED:  I found out this is the first phase of Dutch Beauty.  Nicole didn't want to stitch the whole thing so she just did this part and filled in a few spots with random motifs.

I hope you enjoyed seeing some of the things I saw.  I wish I would have taken even more pictures to share with you.  I get caught up visiting and forget sometimes.  Imagine that?!

***

Well, I'm going to go back to my stitching.  I hope you are able to get some couch time this weekend too.  Thank you for your sweet comments and for your visits with me.  I really do enjoy our time together.

Until next time,

Blackbird Designs Exchange

Now that I know my exchange partner has received her package for the Blackbird Designs Exchange, I can show you what I sent to her! My partner was Mayte over at MagicXstitch.  This is the first time I've had Mayte as an exchange partner and it was fun to stitch for her.

Design: Summer Sachet from A Stitcher's Journey
Designer: Blackbird Designs
Fabric: 30 ct. Parchment
Floss:  CC & GAST as charted
Started: 10/19/12
Finished: 10/20/12
Completed: 10/20/12

I'm sure this looks familiar.  LOL!  I actually stitched and finished Mayte's piece first.  Then fell in love with it so I stitched myself one. Of course I couldn't tell you that when I posted about mine earlier. LOL!

I decided to do a "Carol" finish on it.  Yes, I've unofficially dubbed this the "Carol."  I can't take credit for coming up with this cute finish.  It's Carol who inspired me.  I dearly love her little pillows she makes and I thought Mayte would too!  I just love that stripe fabric and that pretty little piece of lace.

Just look at the two of them together!  Since I did hers first I stitched it the way it was charted.  When I was done I felt like it needed something so I backstitched my initials and the date on the right.  Then I still felt like it needed something so I attached the button.  I can't decide which version I like better.  They are both really cute!

Have you ever stitched something for an exchange only to fall in love with it and stitch another for yourself?  I know I've stitched some exchange pieces that I wish I'd kept but I didn't.  This time I couldn't help myself.  I just had to stitch it again!

I'm glad Mayte likes what I stitched for her.  Obviously I really enjoyed stitching it for her.  Thanks goes to LisaV for coordinating this exchange!  I can't wait to participate in the next round.  I truly do enjoy stitching for others and exchanging is a great way to share that love of stitching.

***

Well folks here we are at another weekend.  I hope everyone had a good week and will have the opportunity for some stitchy time this weekend!  Thanks so much for visiting with me today.

Road Trip!

A week ago today, my friend Linda and I packed up the car and headed to Morgantown, West Virginia for a lecture by Pat Ryan and Ann Robbins of R & R Reproductions at West Virginia University.  We were a little hesitant early in the week knowing "Sandy" was coming but after confirming the lecture was a go we set off.  We ran into some spots of rain and drizzle but nothing major.

We made one stop on the way there in Wheeling, West Virginia, at the Russell Stover store!  It was my first time there.  Check out this huge box of chocolates!  I've never seen a box that big before...two and a half pounds worth!!!  W-O-W!  No, I didn't buy one.  I'd hurt myself with that much chocolate!

Of course I couldn't get out of there without a few things!  I had to have one of the 100th anniversary tins that came with the neatest little Whitman history booklet and a couple other goodies for my honey.

We arrived in Morgantown in time to unpack and settle in a bit.  We decided to walk to the restaurant next door for dinner before the lecture.  This was all that was left of the snow they'd gotten the day before.  Our waiter said they had gotten 6" but that it had all melted away in the rain that followed.  Did we get lucky or what?!

The lecture was incredible.  I learned so much and I took three pages of notes. Yep, I'm a perpetual college student at heart, what can I say.  I'm also a lover of history so this lecture was right up my alley!

Before the lecture, I had been given a "heads up" that Pat had written a book on historic samplers back in the 1990's and was lucky enough to find one for a decent price on Amazon before the trip.  I took it with me to get it autographed.  That was so cool!

The best part was we got to see almost every sampler pictured in the book and even a few that weren't in the book!  Ann passed the samplers around while Pat talked about them.  I was amazed at how beautiful they were in person.  It was fascinating to hear each one's story and get to see them close up.

So what did I learn?  Several things!  Pat talked a lot about symbolism.  I learned that two birds facing each other means harmony in the household.  If they are facing away there is discord in the household.  A rabbit means fertility.  Strawberries were considered symbols of the fruit of life.

We learned about red dyes.  The colorfast reds were made with cochineal bugs.  This was familiar to me from my quilt history studies and I was happy to have that connection to samplers too.  We learned that some reds were made with cranberry dye which faded to pink and ultimately white in a matter of six months!  So if you see an antique sampler that has a pink or white where a red would have made sense, it most likely was a cranberry dye.

We heard about the various historic houses and museums Pat visited to study the samplers she reproduced.  Some were laid back and others very protective of their samplers.  One even had a guard that stood over her as she worked.  Talk about no pressure!  Not!  LOL!

We learned about the funny symbols you see on Quaker samplers (look at the line under the numbers) and learned their meaning.  If another Quaker saw the symbols then they knew they could speak freely of their religion in that household!  I always wondered what those things were.

We also learned that Quaker samplers don't say January, February, March, etc.  Instead they say first month, second month, third month, etc.  That's another clue I didn't know.  Just look at Sally Starbuck's sampler above.  Yes, Sally is related to the Starbucks as in coffee!  Cool isn't it?!

We saw a Mormon sampler by Mary Smithies and learned about the hand cart brigade migration.  I had no idea those folks walked to Utah!  We learned that this sampler was stitched on a "learner's cloth" and still had the blue threads in it!  Pat said she had to weave the blue threads into the reproduction before starting the actual stitching!  I really like this one.

We saw two samplers stitched by little boys.  George Eisenbrey was naughty and was made to stitch this sampler with the little girls.  We don't know what he did to receive this punishment but I'm sure stitching this sampler was enough to straighten him out.

The other boy's sampler was done by Julian Chamberlain.  He had been ill and stitched his while in recovery.  I liked how he used the space below his name to practice some specialty stitches.

This sampler by Sarah Ann Buck was one of my favorites.  I love the green fabric she chose.  We learned the fabric color represents the color of slate chalkboards of the time.  I love how the colors just pop off that background!

In total we saw 45 amazing samplers and I learned so many new-to-me things!  It was fun to make some connections between samplers, quilts, and woven coverlets too.  I hope to make many more of these connections in the future.  I always love an opportunity to learn new things and this was very much worth the five hour drive!

I'd love to show you all 45 samplers but you'll just have to go find a copy of Pat's book!  It's worth it to hunt one up because there are charts for every sampler in it!  I've already added several to my "to stitch someday" list.  The samplers in the book now have a very special memory of a wonderful night spent with special friends old and new.  I can't wait to get stitching!

***

The next morning we had to go find the University parking office to pay the parking ticket we were gifted the night before!  We did not see a sign anywhere telling us it was a permit only space nor did we see a sign telling us where we should park.  Oh well, we made our donation and off we went.

Well, we did have to stop across the street for a Starbuck's salted caramel hot chocolate and a pumpkin scone!  Yum!  Yes, my peep, Linda has me addicted to those things!  Thank goodness they are seasonal.   LOL!

Our trip home was uneventful and we arrived back at my house late afternoon.  It was a great mini getaway and I'm so glad we went!  I can't wait for another opportunity to road trip with Linda.  We had a blast!!!  It's always good to drink from the well of knowledge and spend time with a good friend too.

This post has gotten pretty lengthy today.  Thanks for taking time to visit with me!  I hope your day is good.

Seasonal Exchange - Fall received

Guess what the mailman brought me yesterday?  Yep, my Fall edition of the Seasonal Exchange and it came from Lynn in OK!  I was just thinking about it yesterday and when I got home there it was!  How cool is that for good timing?!

Just look at this cuteness and that pretty card!  Lynn tells me it is a Stitchworks design from 2001 and it's stitched on 28 ct. blue lugana with Sampler Threads.  I love those super cute buttons!  Let's look at them a little closer.

I love the fabric and ribbon she chose to finish it.  It matches the design perfectly!  I just love that it's a pillow too since I've been on a pillow kick myself lately.  I also have to tell you that Lynn not only stitches beautifuly but has the prettiest handwriting ever too!

Thank you so much, Lynn!  I really love this super cute pillow and will always think of you when I put out my autumn display.  I am so happy you stitched this for me!  Thanks also to Lisa S for coordinating the exchange.  I can't wait to play along again!

I had wanted to share my mini road trip with you today but I felt it was more important to share Lynn's gift instead.  We'll visit again soon and then I'll tell you about the trip.  Happy Tuesday friends!

Seasonal Exchange - Fall

Since I know my partner has received what I sent her, I can now share with you what I made and who I made it for!  Laura was my partner for this exchange.  You'll remember she was my partner for the Blackbird Designs Exchange in the spring too.  What are the chances of getting to stitch for the same person twice in one year?!  Here's what I sent:

Design: Fall Squared
Designer: Lizzie Kate
Fabric: 28 ct. Graziano natural/cream gingham
Floss:  DMC as charted
Started:  10/6/12
Finished:  10/16/12
Completed:  10/20/12

I decided to do a pinkeep finish this time so I could send it in a flat envelope.  The last time I sent something to Laura it took forever to get there so I was hoping the flat finish would maybe speed it along faster!

The fabric in the background is what I used on the back. I like how the sheer ribbon picked up the burgandy color in the pumpkins. I decided to do the leaves in the orange color instead of the charted color because the oak leaves in my yard are orange. Other than that, it's pretty much stitched as charted.

This is one well traveled piece too.  It went all the way to Utah with me but sadly never made it out of my stitch bag. I did, however, take it to the Tiara Retreat.  The stitching got started and finished there! You'll remember I showed you this picture from the retreat.

I'm glad Laura got it so quickly this time!  I really enjoyed stitching for her again and I'm glad she liked it too!  I can't wait to see who is stitching for me.  I'll be sure to post what I receive so you can see it too.

Thanks so much for stopping by today.  I'll be back shortly to tell you about a mini road trip I took last Thursday and Friday!
